Why Leash & Hand?

Dogs are our companions, friends, service partners, and hunting buddies.  They become members of our families. Our lives are enriched because of the joy, warmth, and humor dogs provide.

Here at Leash & Hand, I strive to strengthen and enhance the human-canine bond while making sure learning is not only pleasurable, but rewarding for both species.

My Philosophy

My ultimate goal at Leash & Hand is to provide you, the human, with sound, research-based methods for training your dog.  While I embrace the science for its rigour and truth, I deeply understand and honor the heart connection with these intelligent, sentient creatures who have become such an integral part of our lives.

I promote force-free training not only because science supports it as the best option for optimal learning, but because it is the right thing to do.  Learning should never involve pain or fear.

 My Background

Cheryl J Cornett, M.Ed, CPDT-KA, CNWI

I’m a proud honors graduate of CATCH Canine Trainer Academy, Master Class. This means my knowledge of the latest research-based evidence provides you with the most effective way to teach your dog the behaviors you want him to learn.  Combine that education with over 18 years of teaching elementary school children in the classroom, and you have found a trainer with experience, patience, and a sense of humor.

Lastly, my passion is nose work.  I am absolutely gob-smacked by what dogs do for us using their noses–from bomb detection to cancer and diabetic alert dogs, to playing scent games–I find the scientific world of canine olfactory fascinating.  So, it’s no surprise that I am also an Certified Nose Work Instructor with the National Association of Canine Scent Work.
